Explore Our Therapy Methods

Strengths-based Therapy

Our very own strengths are the basis for our recovery and healing. Strengths-based therapy highlights our best qualities and sheds light on our resiliency. No matter what our diagnosis, this type of individual counseling for adults encourages us to give energy to our positive traits in order to increase our functionality in the world and belief in ourselves.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Trauma-informed therapists empower us to take an active role in our own treatment, provide an emotionally and psychologically safe space, build our understanding of the aftereffects of trauma, enhance our coping skills, and help reduce our shame. Trauma therapists support clients with aiming to heal the underlying issues created by a traumatic event.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps us become aware of unhelpful or inaccurate thoughts so we can look at difficult situations more clearly and respond more effectively. Cognitive behavioral therapy in Eugene, Oregon and all locations can include therapeutic “homework” assignments to help the client practice new ways of behaving that are beneficial.

Humanistic Therapy

The primary principle of humanistic therapy is that everyone has their own experience and unique way of looking at the world, which guides our decisions and actions. It encourages us to be ourselves, with the goal of finding fulfillment, wisdom and healing. Open ended questions, empathic understanding, and genuineness are key characteristics of a humanistic therapist.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR is an effective psychotherapy treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. The techniques allow the mind to heal from psychological trauma. Try EMDR therapy Eugene Oregon and all locations if you are interested in reducing psychological distress.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT involves the concept of dialectics (the integration of our opposing viewpoints), which helps us free ourselves from extreme positions that cause us distress. DBT originated from a combination of CBT (see above), Humanism (see above), and mindfulness. Please be aware that I am not a certified DBT therapist. However, I can guide you through many DBT-related strategies including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Supportive Therapy

Active listening, encouraging, advising, and comforting are the hallmarks of supportive therapy. It aims to alleviate the intensity of our distress and enhance our healthy and adaptive patterns of thought.

Healing Trauma at Mend House Therapy

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, crime, natural disaster, physical or emotional abuse, neglect, experiencing or witnessing violence, death of a loved one, war, and more.

— American Psychological Association

Some people feel “broken” by traumatic events in their lives. They think they can never get better – that they are doomed to a life of continued suffering. The truth is this: our brains are wired for change and growth. With the right therapeutic interventions, we can recover and heal from trauma and live the lives we want to live.

It starts with trauma-informed therapy, which provides emotional and psychological safety to empower the client to make decisions about their treatment and recovery. From this foundation, I can support you in learning about the ways in which your past trauma is affecting your current functioning. In therapy sessions, we introduce copings skills, including honoring your natural strengths and abilities that have helped you survive. Strengths-based approaches acknowledge the hard work you have already done, while integrating new helpful strategies.

EMDR therapy is an evidence-based approach to therapy that helps people to reprocess disturbing memories that impact their current mental and behavioral health. It is based on the principle that we have an innate ability to heal, and we can use our own physical bodies to remove the blockages that are hindering our healing. As an EMDR therapist in Eugene, I support clients with healing from trauma and living fuller lives.
